Our History

Learn More About Us

April Point Resort & Spa's history is deeply rooted in the local salmon fishing traditions of Discovery Passage and Quadra Island. Due to the abundance of salmon fishing in the Campbell River area during the 1930s and 1940s, a number of BC fishing lodges sprang up to accommodate the increase in visitors. And while the other fishing resorts catered to tourists, April Point operated as a camp for commercial fishermen in the 1940s.

At the end of the decade, the property was bought by Phil and Phyllis Peterson. Soon visitors to the area were asking to rent the original cabins on the beach. The Petersons renovated the old fishermen’s cabins, added a main lodge building and began operating the property as a BC fishing lodge for anglers. April Point in its current form began to take shape.

After Mr. Peterson’s death in the 1970s, his sons and Mrs. Peterson continued to run the salmon fishing resort until 1998, when they sold the property to the Oak Bay Marine Group. Extensive renovations were made to the existing buildings and April Point Resort & Spa became a sister resort to Painter’s Lodge, the resort it had been facing across Discovery Passage for 50 years.

The resort continues to grow and evolve, always preserving the original charm that made it a local favourite. New in 2005 is the addition of the Aveda spa at April Point, offering an assortment of health and beauty treatments. It incorporates Aveda’s holistic approach to integrating natural elements in the body.

The resort is now a retreat for couples, families and friends looking to escape the busy world to a natural, peaceful environment and simply relax.
